Put Waste in the Right Place - Create a Cleaner, Greener Community

Put Waste in the Right Place - Create a Cleaner, Greener Community
Speaker: Philip Homerski , Information & Business Advisor, Operations & Waste Management Division, City of Hamilton (ON)

Session Description: This eSession will examine the successful “Put Waste in the Right Place” campaign developed by the Cith of Hamilton (ON). This campaign encourages the public to collect, separate, and appropriately divert waste materials whether at home or at a public venue such as parks, trails, roadways and facilities. In this eSession you will learn how the City developed a strategic public educational campaign focused on user groups including sport associations, sport teams, parks facility renters, day camp programs, and Adopt-a-Park groups. The City also developed a Corporate Waste Management Program that introduced waste diversion programs into its operations including public venues and open space areas. Social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter as well as on-line surveys are being used to gauge community response, engagement and compliance. The campaign has been well received by the public and has caught the attention of several major corporations who wish to support this message on a wider scale. The City has noticed an improvement in the quality of recyclable materials captured in the containers which are labeled with the “Put Waste in the Right Place” decals. Appropriate signage on containers is very important to help improve diversion rates and minimize contamination. Hamilton’s program has several elements which can be easily replicated in other municipal jurisdictions.
