Speaker: Miriam Zimms, Director of Program Planning & Development, Kessler Consulting, Inc.

Session Description: This eSession will provide a comprehensive overview of the role a waste assessment can play in a successful commercial/institutional (C/I) recycling program. First, the web seminar will cover the assessment’s purpose and benefits. Among these are economic benefits and work practice efficiencies. The presentation will then explain what resources are required to execute the assessment, and also what six (6) steps are necessary to plan and implement the waste assessment successfully. The steps that will be examined are:

  • Planning
  • Tools and preliminary activities
  • Information/Data Gathering
  • Site Visit
  • Analysis
  • Recommendations and Next Steps
Discussion will include case studies from the Southeast that incorporated assessments into new or existing C/I Recycling Program plans. Locations discussed will include Charlston County, SC; City of Tallahasee, FL; and FL’s 2nd largest hospital. There will also be examples of recently completed assessments. Participants will gain the knowledge and insight necessary to incorporate commercial waste assessments into their own solid waste management program.
