50 is the New 20 – Extending a Landfill’s Life through Proper Landfill Management
Allison Tyldesley, Landfill Technician, Halton Waste Management Site, ON
This speaker will discuss the various landfill management practices at the Halton Waste Management Site that have contributed to extending the landfill life from 20 years, to more than 50 years.
Opened in 1992 and approved for 7.96 million m3 of waste, the Halton Waste Management Site was expected to reach capacity this year, 2012. Successful landfill management practices, combined with Halton’s progressive diversion programs, have extended the site life until at least the year 2040.
This presentation will highlight the keys to successfully operating a landfill site, while providing excellent customer service to the public year round.
Specifically, this eSession will cover the following:
- Developing effective site design, landfill construction and cell development
- Employing proper environmental controls
- Exploring the benefits of having a fully integrated waste management system
- Implementing successful daily operations
- Utilizing unique, innovative diversion (plant pots, hockey sticks, crutches and canes) and educational programs
The Halton Waste Management Site is a fully integrated waste management facility and Halton Region’s one-stop solution for all recycling and disposal services. This state-of-the-art, centrally located site features progressive design and operational practices that have been implemented to minimize and eliminate environmental impacts. Over 200,000 metric tonnes of material were brought to the Halton Waste Management Site in 2011, and of that, 73,000 tonnes were landfilled.
For 20 years, the HWMS has been committed to providing excellent customer service to more than 200,000 residents and 8,500 waste collection vehicles that visit the site every year. Halton Region is dedicated to managing waste and has implemented numerous innovative diversion and recycling programs both at the HWMS and at the curb to help reach Halton’s goal of 65% diversion by 2016.
