The Hickman Fund

The Lanny and Kay Hickman Internship Program offers students the opportunity to work with SWANA members in internships, or co-op positions, at various locations, or in the SWANA offices in Silver Spring, Maryland.  Outputs from the projects and studies are intended to assist organizations working in the industry.

Students selected for this honor will utilize and develop their skills in investigative and analytical research, in addition to further enhancing their organization, coordination, and networking skills.  This program is dedicated to helping students acquire practical working skills, experience the realities of the work world, and expand their knowledge and understanding of solid waste management.

The intern's work program is defined by the Hickman Intern Committee and the student, centered around their course of study and the needs of SWANA, as well as the sponsoring organization.  Each intern will be expected to publish a paper on their work to benefit others.

Candidates must have at least a 3.0/4.0 GPA, must be entering at least their junior year, and commit a minimum of 20 hours per week for a full semester (fall, spring, or summer). Universities must provide academic credit for the interns.   Individuals selected will receive a variety of financial support depending on the need.  For more information, contact Kathy Callaghan in SWANA's offices.
