Session 3: Evaluating the Growing Interest in One-Bin Collection and Mixed Waste Recycling

Panelists will present the reasons behind the renewed interest in mixed waste recycling and a summary of a recent ARF report on single stream recycling versus mixed waste recycling. Participants will then break into small groups to discuss the following questions: 1) When – if ever– might mixed waste recycling be considered for implementation in your communities and 2) what factors – pro and con – would have to be addressed for the conversion to mixed waste recycling to occur?

Jeremy K. O’Brien is a solid waste management researcher and consultant who has over 30 years of experience in the industry.
Since February 1999, he has served as the Director of Applied Research for the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), and has continued to provide consulting services to local governments as an independent solid waste management consultant.

From 1989-1999, Mr. O'Brien was employed by HDR, Inc. – a global architectural, engineering and consulting firm with over 7,800 employees in 180 offices through the United States.

From 1979-1989, Mr. O'Brien worked for Public Technology Institute -- a local government research organization which serves as the technical arm of the National League of Cities and the International City Management Association.

Mr. O’Brien began his career by serving as a Research Associate at the National Center For Resource Recovery in Washington, DC from 1977-1979.

Mr. O’Brien received an M.S. degree from Duke University in Urban and Environmental Engineering in 1977 as well as a B.A. degree in liberal arts from Duke University in 1974.

Mr. O’Brien obtained his Professional Engineering registration and license in 1984.
Steve Viny currently serves as CEO of Envision Holdings. Mr. Viny’s 34 years of waste industry experience includes the ownership and operation of sanitary landfills, C&D landfills, transfer stations, compost facilities, single stream MRF’s dirty MRF’s, and a waste hauling company. Even when he is not on his track bike, Mr. Viny likes to stay in the front of the pack. He holds 2 US Patents and has been recognized for his innovations in the Waste Industry with the Enterprise Development Innovation Award, SWANA Innovator of the Year Award, SWANA Professional Achievement Award, Green Business Award, and a variety of others. In 2000, Mr. Viny served as the first private sector International President of SWANA. At Wastecon 2012, Mr. Viny served as a member of “the Game Changers.” A former graduate of the Arizona State University, Mr. Viny is glad to be here with you today.
