Leveraging the Virtual Pipeline to Deliver Biomethane to Market (0.5 CEU)

The U.S. biogas industry is poised for significant expansion. A major challenge facing agricultural, municipal, and industrial waste sites is their ability to distribute biomethane via dedicated pipelines due to their remote locations. Today, technology has facilitated the development of the “virtual pipeline” to replace traditional “in the ground” pipes as a cost-effective method of transporting biomethane from landfills, wastewater treatment plants and agricultural operations to more diverse markets. Biomethane digester and landfill gas operations that were once too remote for pipeline extensions can now be served by virtual pipelines that truck their high quality biogas for reinjection into traditional pipelines or for direct use by offsite thermal or compressed natural gas loads. What’s more, by leveraging the virtual pipeline, companies can reap the economic benefits of the Renewable Identification Number (RIN) system in which a serial number can be assigned to a batch of biofuel for the purpose of tracking its production, use, and trading as required by the EPA’s Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS).

Drew Drummond

Since 2012, Drew Drummond has held various positions of increasing responsibility at Clean Energy Fuels Corporation (NASDAQ: CLNE), NG Advantage’s majority shareholder. In 2016, Mr. Drummond was promoted to senior business development manager for both companies and is responsible for developing and closing new opportunities, identifying new markets, and fostering customer relationships for both natural gas vehicles (NGV) and industrial compressed/liquefied natural gas (CNG/LNG) users. Mr. Drummond brings more than a decade of experience in business and strategic partner development. Having spent more than half of his career in the energy industry, Mr. Drummond’s comprehensive knowledge about biomethane, CNG and LNG and major fuel conversion projects make him an invaluable resource to companies seeking sustainable and alternative energy solutions. Prior to becoming part of the NG Advantage and Clean Energy team, Mr. Drummond held various managerial positions throughout New England and was a founding member of Woodbrowser, Inc., an online lumber trading company. During his early career, Mr. Drummond was charged with building and analyzing sustainability strategic plans and the review of manufacturing processes, capital funding projects, emissions rulings, permitting regulations, contract revisions, and technology advancement. Mr. Drummond earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the Colby-Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire. He is an active member of the Northern New England Chapter of the National Waste and Recycling Association, sits on the Northeast Gas Association’s NGV Committee and on the New Hampshire Business and Industry Association’s Energy and Telecommunications Committee.
