This report has been prepared to provide solid waste managers with up-to-date information and guidance on options for recycling the organic fraction of the municipal solid waste (MSW) stream.
This research need, which was submitted by SCS Engineers and voted on for selection by the
SWANA Applied Research Foundation's Fiscal Year (FY) 2012 Disposal Group, was described as
“SCS would like to see some research into organics management, particularly ways we can keep that waste coming to the landfill but maybe managed in a different way. That is, comparison of landfilling (with and without energy recovery), composting (including use of some compost as a biocover), anaerobic digestion, biomass to energy as well as some more cutting edge technologies like gasification, conversion to liquid fuels, Waste Management’s reclaimable anaerobic composting (RAC), etc.”
