2016 Safety Stand Down Awareness Week
January 23, 2017 – Friday, January 27, 2017
SWANA is happy to support this year’s Safety Stand Down on Backing. This week-long training and awareness effort is focused around reducing accidents, fatalities and injuries related to truck backing incidents. Fatalities caused by backing vehicles continue to be a leading cause of preventable deaths for waste & recycling workers, accounting for nearly 30% of industry worker fatalities in 2015. An NHTSA study of fatal crashes found that large trucks were at-fault for 87 of the 89 backing crash fatalities (98%) involving cars.
The Safety Stand-Down runs the week of January 23–27, 2017. Members of the waste and recycling industry are asked to join SWANA’s commitment, in conjunction with NWRA and other leaders within the solid waste community, toward significantly improving safety for the waste and recycling industry by taking part in this effort. Participants will receive a toolkit of resources for the Stand Down upon registration.
Participation means that your organization has joined with waste and recycling companies across the country to commit to:
- Conduct a risk assessment at job sites and review safety policies and procedures for backing
- Review company policies, procedures, consider enhancements, and then train employees on any changes
- Post Stand Down materials to the company website, in employee meeting rooms and on social media sites
- Use a series of five editions of Safety Monday to share with employees during the event
- SWANA’s Top Ten Backing Best Management Practices Guide
According to industry and OSHA data, backing represents approximately 25% of all injuries and accidents in the solid waste collection industry. Use this guide covering the industry’s best backing practices to educate employees to stay safe on the job.
