The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) introduced, David Steiner, CEO of Waste Management, Inc. as the Lawrence Lecturer for WASTECON 2007.

Mr. Steiner shared what he calls their "Wizard of Oz mentality"—stating that "it's time to come out from behind the curtain" and let customers know what this waste industry corporation is doing to promote sustainability.

Steiner is leading his organization towards four important goals.  First, garbage is a renewable resource.  Second, Waste Management intends to triple the amount of materials recycling.  Third, they will invest in new technologies including trucks with better fuel economy and reduced emissions. And lastly, take advantage of partnerships such as the Wildlife Habitat Council.

"It's great to have one of our industry leaders address our members and attendees with such bold directives towards sustainability," said John H. Skinner, Ph.D., Executive Director and CEO of SWANA.

Mr. Steiner informed the attendees about the current steps the industry takes to show the public the importance of proper waste management. He aims to protect the environment by eliminating the emission of greenhouse gases and the excessive overuse of energy. Mr. Steiner, with the help of his staff, hope to get their message out to the public and try to change the way the public looks at the solid waste management industry.
