SWANA Releases Updated On-Site Waste Screening Course

The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) has released its updated Waste Screening at MSWM Facilities training course. The course, developed under contract with Innovative Waste Solutions, addresses the fundamentals of an environmentally and economically sound waste screening program, as well as potential operational issues that screeners may encounter. This course is coming on the heels of the EPA’s update to the definition of solid waste. In October, SWANA advised its members on the increased importance of waste screening practices as a result of the updated rule.

“Municipal solid waste managers need to know where their wastes are coming from and SWANA strongly encourages more vigilant practices to detect and screen out prohibited wastes,” said John H. Skinner, SWANA Executive Director and CEO.

The Waste Screening Course was developed through an interview process of various municipal solid waste screening programs. The information was then complied and reviewed by a committee of solid waste experts.

The course, with eight total hours of instruction divided into six lessons, will initially be available as an On-Site training package. SWANA’s On-Site training packages are designed to allow supervisors to train their staff in their own facility. Each package includes five student manuals, one instructor manual and a Power Point presentation.
