WASTECON® 2013 and BEYOND

At the time of this article, having reviewed the final agenda for WASTECON® 2013, I am assured that the conference will again be successful in addressing the needs not only of the diverse population of SWANA members, but also of the Landfill Management (LFM) Division members. Now that WASTECON® has transpired, and SWANA staff can breathe a momentary sigh of relief, we can reflect on the accomplishment of addressing the broad array of interests in our industry such as:

  • Waste processing considerations ranging from green waste composting to technologically complex waste conversion processes
  • Recycling issues ranging from collection challenges to a variety of material recovery processes
  • Non-technical issues ranging from flow control and local politics to the continued greening of our industry and a diverse range of technological papers, and
  • Landfill issues including final covers, landfill-gas-to-energy (LFGE), permitting and development of solar power.
  • With more than 600 members, the Landfill Management Technical Division (LMTD) remains one of the largest and most active divisions. During the course of this year, the LMTD leadership and SWANA staff discussed how we can continue meeting the needs of the LMTD. In meeting the needs of the LMTD, we are reminded that, while landfills remain an integral component of integrated solid waste management systems, many municipal solid waste management facilities have dramatically evolved from just landfills to complex, multi-faceted facilities that include a broad range of operations including material recovery facilities, green waste composting, LFGE, household hazardous waste management facilities, citizens’ convenience, scrap tire processing, etc. Furthermore, with increased buffer zones and productive post-closure land use, landfills have become better integrated into local land use patterns. In view of such changes in these facilities, we are continuing to expand the focus of the LMTD, including a possible “re-branding” of the Technical Division. In this “rebranding” discussion, the following new names for the TD have been mentioned:

  • Landfill and Resource Management TD
  • Integrated Waste Management TD
  • Materials Management TD.
  • Of course, any change of this nature will entail the full participation of the LFTD membership. To that end, your TD leadership and SWANA staff welcome your suggestions regarding this possible re-branding or other ideas for the current Landfill Management TD. Furthermore, we currently have openings on each of our committees, including Training, Rules and Regulations, Health and Safety, Program, and Awards, where you can contribute directly to the continued growth and development of our industry.

As of September 20, 2013, I am honored to say that, consistent with SWANA’s tradition of progressing from Vice Director to Director, I will begin my two-year term as the Director of the Landfill Management Technical Division. As in my prior role as Vice Director, please contact me at kyard@scsengineers.com if you have any questions, comments or suggestions regarding the Division’s programs or activities.
