SWANA Chapter Awarded for Exceptional Safety Leadership
South Carolina Palmetto Chapter to be Honored at WASTECON® in Nashville

Silver Spring, MD – The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) is proud to announce that its South Carolina Palmetto Chapter will be recognized with a special SWANA Chapter Safety Award at WASTECON® 2018 in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Palmetto Chapter is being presented this award for its exemplary leadership in solid waste safety over the past year. Specifically, the Chapter organized and implemented Hauler Safety Outreach events in 2017 and 2018 at Municipal Solid Waste landfills, Construction and Demolition landfills and transfer stations throughout the state. At numerous facilities on multiple days, the Chapter provided vital safety resources to haulers of all sizes and raised the profile of both the Chapter and SWANA’s safety initiatives.

“I am thrilled to provide this special SWANA safety recognition to our South Carolina Palmetto chapter,” said David Biderman, SWANA’s Executive Director and CEO. “Getting safety information into the hands of drivers and helpers, particularly those at small haulers, will help reduce accidents and injuries for collection employees. We expect other SWANA chapters to follow South Carolina’s lead over the next few months.”

The leadership shown by the Palmetto Chapter in planning and executing these events has served as a great inspiration to other SWANA Chapters and helped propel SWANA’s Hauler Safety Toolkit to completion. The lessons learned from the Palmetto Chapter’s outreach were integral to the development of the Toolkit, which brings together valuable safety resources into a simple, shareable form that SWANA Chapters will use at future Hauler Safety Outreach events across North America.

“The South Carolina Chapter would like to thank SWANA for the special safety recognition; we are, and always will be, committed to safety awareness in our state,” says John Tilton III, SWANA South Carolina Safety Ambassador and District Manager at Waste Management Inc. “We will continue to try and reach out to all involved in the solid waste industry so that at the end of the day, we can all return home to our families every night.”

The special 2018 Chapter Safety Award will be presented during SWANA’s Annual Business Meeting and Awards Luncheon on August 22 at WASTECON® 2018 in Nashville, Tennessee. At this event, SWANA will also be recognizing winners of the 2018 Excellence Awards, Professional Achievement Awards, and other accomplishments and milestones of the Association’s Chapters and Technical Divisions.
