Fast-track Your Way to Becoming a New Jersey Certified Recycling Professional!

by Adam Piccin Oct 30, 2023, 15:56 PM

If you’ve taken SWANA’s Managing Recycling Systems course or have earned SWANA’s Recycling certification, you may qualify to take a condensed, four-day program —rather than the standard 21-day program—to become a New Jersey Certified Recycling Professional (CRP).

This shortcut to certification saves you 17 days of instruction!

The NJ Alternate Recycling Certification Series is designed for municipal, county, or private sector employees who have significant experience in recycling and/or solid waste, or those who have completed other professional certification programs, such as those offered for health officers, public works managers, and business administrators. SWANA’s Recycling course and certification are recognized for admission into the Alternate program.

The Alternate program presents key information that individuals will need to know to fulfill the duties of a New Jersey CRP. Upon completion of the four days of instruction, which are scheduled one day per week for four consecutive weeks, attendees who wish to become CRPs will be required to sit for and pass a written exam based on the program content.

Day One

  • The Recycling Coordinator’s Primer
  • NJ Department of Environmental Protection Regulations, Facts, and Figures

Day Two

  • Effective Communication/Promotion and Using Reporting Data
  • Filing, Reporting, and Enforcement at the Municipal and County Levels

Day Three

  • Recycling Economics, Markets, and Marketing

Day Four

  • Collection Techniques and Contracting
  • Case Studies

The next presentation of the Alternate program is scheduled for April 11, 18, 25, and May 2, 2024. The exam date is May 7. Registration closes April 8, 2024, 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The program is delivered online in a live, instructor-led format. To register, contact Carol Broccoli at carolbr@njaes.rutgers.edu or 848.932.7207. Click here to learn more.

This partnership between SWANA and NJ-state institutions and associations is a shining example of how academia and industry can combine their strengths and resources in working towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.

New Jersey’s Recycling Enhancement Act (REA) requires that reports or other recycling-related documents be signed/certified by a CRP. Since its inception in 1993, the New Jersey Recycling Certification Program has trained more than 250 individuals in topics ranging from economics to truck routing to public communication. In response to the need for CRPs generated by the passage of the Act, the Rutgers University New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station Office of Continuing Professional Education, in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) and the Association of New Jersey Recyclers (ANJR), has expanded the program into two tiers, with the type of training program a potential attendee requires determined by a combination of experience, prior training, and existing certifications.
