In 2014, Kathryn Garcia became the 43rd Commissioner for New York City's Department of Sanitation (DSNY). Commissioner Garcia has led key initiatives, such as producing and releasing the department's first strategic plan, setting key environmental goals to send zero waste to landfills, and implementing a modernized citywide snow response. Commissioner Garcia has also been appointed Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for the New York City Housing Authority, and has recently been appointed New York City Food Czar. Commissioner Garcia earned her Bachelor of Arts in Economics and History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
