The Road to Zero Waste conference will be held March 5-7, 2018, in Denver, Colorado.

Call for Presentation Proposals

The call for presentation proposals is now open for the 2018 events that comprise SWANApalooza, the annual Spring technical conference for solid waste management professionals.

Deadline to submit is Tuesday, August 1, 2017.

Submit your ONE best proposal on a topic that addresses the future of solid waste management, innovative practices, and ideas that will offer the audience a “WOW” factor that will have the audience talking about your presentation for days after the event. Multiple submissions from the same speaker will not be allowed.

The conference planners are most interested in presentations that involve the audience in a conversation, rather than a simple lecture that delivers information. Panel discussions, debates and other formats with audience engagement will receive priority over single presenter, PowerPoint presentations.

Presentations from Young Professionals (age 35 or younger) are strongly encouraged. Mentoring by a seasoned professional partnering with a YP to lead a discussion is one way to help a YP build a speaking resume.

Before submitting your proposal, please review the information you will need to enter. You may want to draft your proposal in a Word document so you can cut and paste the information into the appropriate fields, keeping to the stated word guidelines.

Explanation of Presentation Formats

  • Learning through Stories (aka Case Study) (30 Minutes) — maximum Primary Presenter plus one other — Describe not just what you did and how you did it, but how you determined success. What is innovative about your story that will help others achieve similar goals? Where’s the WOW factor?
  • Let’s Talk About It (30 Minutes) — maximum Primary Presenter plus one other — Set up the topic in the first five minutes (a few slides can be used to establish the topic), engage the audience in a conversation to share ideas for 20 minutes, and then do a wrap up that captures the best shared thoughts in the last five minutes. Flipcharts and scribes to record input may be helpful. Publish a summary in SWANA’s Open Forum after the conference to give members access to the insights you’ve captured.
  • 360 Panel (60 Minutes) — maximum Moderator (Primary Presenter) and 2–3 panelists. Bring together several subject matter experts (SMEs) for a dialogue on a current challenge. Short (5 minutes maximum) presentations by each speaker can be used to set the stage for the discussion, but most of the presentation should be a dialogue between presenters or between presenters and the audience. Describe not only the topic, but how you will engage the audience in ways other than traditional Q&A at the end.
  • See It My Way — Debate (30 Minutes) — Moderator (Primary Presenter) and 2 SMEs. Recruit 2 people with different opinions on a topic to engage in a friendly debate (no pistols at dawn), providing backing data to support their views. Slides may be used in short introductory statements (5 minutes maximum) to establish viewpoints, but the remainder of the session should be a point/counterpoint conversation guided by questions from the moderator. Use the last few minutes to poll the audience about which person “won” the debate.
