Comparison of Emissions From WTE and Coal-Fired Power Plants

Publication date: September, 2006. Waste-to-energy (WTE) facilities are generally more economical when compared to coal-fired power plants, but are they cleaner?

Additional Information:

In 2003, the US Environmental Protection Agency stated: “Waste-to-energy [WTE] plants produce electricity with less environmental impact than almost any other source of electricity.”

When comparing environmental factors such as transportation and landfill closure, WTE plants are obviously more beneficial than coal. However, burning municipal solid waste (MSW) still has concerns, such as comparable air emissions.

Using MSW instead of coal significatly REDUCES the emission of these pollutants:

  • Sulfer Dioxide
  • Nitrogen Oxides
  • Carbon Dioxide

Using MSW instead of coal INCREASES the emission of these pollutants:

  • Dioxins
  • Mercury
