Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances or PFAS, are used in a wide variety of consumer products and have been detected in air, surface water, wastewater, biosolids, humans and wildlife, even in pristine areas. They are sometimes referred to as forever chemicals because they tend to bioaccumulate and do not typically biodegrade in landfills and wastewater treatment plants. Because solid waste disposal facilities serve as a repository for many consumer products at the end of their useful life, it is not surprising that PFAS have been identified in landfill leachate and in compost. The objective of this webinar is to introduce the topic of PFAS in solid waste. The webinar will explain sources of PFAS as well as known health impacts and exposure pathways. The webinar will summarize information on PFAS in landfill leachate and in compost and discuss implications for the solid waste industry. It will also explore the current management options available and how states are implementing regulation.
