Nashville: From Recycle Wrong To Recycle Right

Additional Information:
  • Jennifer Harrman, Zero Waste Program Manager, Metro Nashville Public Works

In 2020, almost half of Nashville, TN’s curbside recycling was contaminated with non-recyclable material, resulting in higher processing costs for the city and its taxpayers. But in a year, Nashville was able to reduce its contamination rate from 46 percent to 28 percent, saving the city thousands of dollars.

In this session, hear how the city ended up with so much trash going into recycling carts, and learn about the strategies and education programs that helped reduce contamination by 18 percent. This program will highlight lessons learned in communicating with the public and elected officials, the benefits of establishing your voice as the authority on recycling rules, and how Nashville went virtual and reframed their education strategy to communicate how to recycle right.
