From a yard waste ban in 1990 to now mandatory programs, learn about the development of organics management in Hennepin County, Minnesota. In 2014, the City of Minneapolis rolled out curbside organics collection. In 2020, large commercial generators of organics were required divert food scraps; and in 2022 all cities in Hennepin County were required to offer residential organics recycling.
Ben Knudson will provide an overview of the policies, programs and infrastructure developed by the County to divert food scraps from the trash. Kellie Kish will explain how the City of Minneapolis rolled out its residential organics collection program, both successes and challenges. Jake Duame will discuss expanding a yard waste composting site to accept food scraps and other compostable materials and marketing the finished compost.
