by Sarah Beidleman Dec 2, 2021, 11:39 AM

The SWANA Young Professionals (YP) group continues to grow and expand across the country. SWANA YP members have been busy this past year speaking at SWANA events, leading teams, mentoring students and making strides in every aspect of the industry. Let’s get to know some of these upcoming industry leaders!

Meet Mauro Sandoval, Public Works Director – City of Alton

Mauro started his career as the Assistant Public Works director for the City of Alton in Texas. In six months, he became the Interim Public Works Director without any notice and little experience at the end of June 2020. As Interim Public Works Director for Alton, one of his most proud accomplishments was the flood mitigation of Hurricane Hanna in July 2020. He shares,  "While in the middle of this COVID pandemic, my team and I removed large bodies of water from flooded homes in less than 96 hours, cleared debris from the streets, and did not stop solid-waste services to our residents".

In October 2020, Mauro became the Public Works Director for City of Alton. Some of his other achievements include making improvements to the solid waste system that increased the city's efficiency and profits. He also continued to learn by taking a course that would improve managing the municipal solid waste system in the city he worked in.

When asked about his experience as a YP member he shares, "Being a YP Member with SWANA has been exhilarating with all the resources that are available to me".
