Certification demonstrates a professional's commitment to lifelong learning and development. There are two ways to maintain your SWANA certification.

Submit Certification Renewal Application and Fee

  1. Obtain 30 Professional Development Hours (PDHs), formerly referred to as CEUs, within the three-year certification term.
  2. Process your Certification Renewal Online OR complete and submit the Certification Renewal Application with the $250 fee to certification@swana.org or fax 301-585-0297 PRIOR to the expiration of the certification term. Please note that the certification renewal fee does NOT include your membership fee; membership fees are collected separately and annually.

Retake Exam if Your Certification has Expired

If your certification has expired, you will need to retake the certification exam and pass it with 70 percent or more to recertify. Please visit our Online Testing Page for more information on how to take the exam.

Where Can I Get PDHs?

  1. Attend a Webinar – Many webinars are free to members, and they often award PDHs. Notice will be given on the webinar registration page.
  2. Online Courses – SWANA offers a variety of online courses as a way to receive top industry training without ever leaving the office.
  3. In-Person Learning Events – SWANA offers in-person learning throughout the year, through its national conferences (SOAR and WASTECON), chapter events, Training@Work Program, and regional forums.
  4. Conference Keynotes – Learn from technical sessions presented by leaders in the solid waste industry
