Earth Day Every Day: Advancing Sustainability Through Action, Expertise & Community

By Amy Lestition Burke, CEO at Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA)

Earth Day is a powerful annual reminder of our shared responsibility to protect the environment. For waste and resource management professionals across North America, this work doesn’t happen just one day a year. It happens every day, in communities large and small, through the essential services that protect public health, conserve resources, and keep materials in productive use.

At SWANA, sustainability is not a side initiative—it is a core commitment woven into our mission and work. One of SWANA’s four Strategic Pillars is Championing Progress on Sustainability, a recognition that advancing environmental outcomes requires both innovation and practical, on‑the‑ground expertise.

From Waste Management to Resource Management

Our industry is continually evolving, moving beyond disposal toward systems that emphasize waste reduction, recycling, organics management, and responsible end‑of‑life solutions. SWANA’s role is to help professionals navigate that transition by providing credible technical guidance, education, and a trusted community of peers.

Sustainability is complex. It requires balancing environmental goals with safety, operational realities, economics, and public expectations. That’s why collaboration and shared learning are so critical—and why SWANA Technical Divisions play such an essential role.

Leading Through the Sustainable Materials Management Technical Division

SWANA’s Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) Technical Division brings together subject matter experts who focus on reducing environmental impacts across the entire materials lifecycle—design, use, recovery, and end‑of‑life management.

Through this Technical Division, SWANA members contribute to:

The work of the SMM Technical Division reflects an important truth: sustainability progress happens when practitioners—those closest to the work—have a seat at the table and a voice in shaping solutions.

Turning Knowledge into Impact

Earth Day is also an opportunity to highlight the importance of turning good intentions into informed action. SWANA supports that by equipping members with:

  • Publications and guidance grounded in practitioner experience and applied research;
  • Webinarstraining courses, and certifications that build not only environmental and operational excellence, but your resume too; and
  • A platform to share lessons learned, innovations, and best practices across regions and job functions.

Whether addressing recycling system design, materials recovery safety, organics diversion, or policy implementation, sustainability outcomes improve when decisions are informed by data, experience, and collaboration.

Looking Ahead, Together

As we recognize Earth Day, I am continually inspired by the professionals who show up every day to do this work—often behind the scenes, always with impact. Championing progress on sustainability is not about perfection; it’sabout continuous improvement, shared responsibility, and a willingness to learn and adapt.

At SWANA, we are proud to support a community that understands sustainability as both a principle and a practice. Thank you to our members, volunteers, and technical leaders—including those in the Sustainable Materials Management Technical Division—who are helping move our industry, and our communities, forward!

Because when we work together, Earth Day truly becomes every day.
