The Resource Recovery Division, part of the city of Alexandria, VA, Department of Transportation and Environmental Services, was awarded the 2018 SWANA Communication, Education & Marketing Best Safety Innovation award. By focusing on leading indicators to prevent accidents and injuries (instead of relying on lagging indicators), the Resource Recovery Division changed worker behavior and improved safety culture. This has yielded increased employee engagement, accountability, and ownership for their safety and the safety of their peers, as well as overall safety awareness.
