Batteries, particularly lithium-ion batteries, present significant challenges for collection, recycling, and disposal due to the potential for hazardous reactions. Improper management or disposal can result in fires, posing serious risks to consumers, waste and recycling workers, and critical infrastructure.
To ensure safety and sustainability, batteries must be handled with specialized care through designated take-back programs, which facilitate proper collection, transport, and recycling and ensure a safe end-of-life outcome.
SWANA and Fire Rover are pleased to provide this collaborative resource on battery fire prevention and a tool for looking up locations near you that offer battery recycling to prevent the dangerous disposal of batteries in household trash and recycling. As SWANA and Fire Rover strive to provide education and advocacy on fires, we are collecting stories and data to support our efforts. Use the ‘report’ feature to report a fire that your facility or organization has experienced.
