Strategies & Priorities

The WCER TD focuses on increasing the profile of waste conversion and energy recovery within integrated waste management systems.  Waste conversion and energy recovery technologies support increased recycling rates, generate clean energy and/or products, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and lower greenhouse gas emissions through the diversion of waste from landfills.

The WCER TD promotes the exchange of experience, information, and innovation for waste-to-energy facilities alongside research, development, and adoption of demonstrated and developmental waste conversion technologies.

Hot Topics

The Waste Conversion & Energy Recovery Technical Division is focusing on these hot topics:

  • Recognition and verification of the role of waste-to-energy and waste conversion systems in the waste hierarchy.
  • Ability of current waste-to-energy facilities to destroy PFAS.
  • Preparing for new and revised regulatory requirements.
