Training & Certification


SWANA strongly advocates lifelong learning as part of a member's personal and professional growth. Here is how to maintain certification.

  1. Obtain 30 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) within the three year validity period of certification or retake the certification exam.
  2. Complete the Certification Renewal Application and return with the $250 fee* (you must pay the Renewal fee even if you take the exam.)
  3. Submit your application and fee to or fax 301-585-0297.

You can also upgrade your certification level by completing and submitting the Upgrade Request Application.

If You Have Not Obtained the Required 30 CEUs Before Your Certification Expiration Date

  1. Complete the Certification Extension Application and return with the $150 fee* no later than one month after the expiration date.
  2. Obtain and submit the necessary CEUs to renew within the required extension period.
  3. Submit your Certification Renewal Application and the $250 fee* to or fax 301-585-0297.

If You Have Obtained the Required 30 CEUs, but Have Not Submitted the Renewal Form and Fee Before Your Expiration Date:

  1. Submit the CEUs if necessary.
  2. Complete the Certification Reactivation/Late Application and return with the $250* renewal and $150* reactivation/late fees.
  3. Submit your application and fees to or fax 301-585-0297.

Where can IGet CEUs?

  1. Attend a Webinar – Many webinars are free to members, and they often award CEU credit. Notice will be given on the webinar registration page.
  2. Online Courses – SWANA offers a variety of online courses as a way to receive top industry training without ever leaving the office.
  3. Training@Work – Do it yourself or SWANA faculty-led training options provide you with unique opportunity to bring SWANA training to the workplace
  4. SWANApalooza 2020 Keynotes – Learn from technical sessions presented by leaders in solid waste industry

CEUs earned vary dependent on the training options.
