From Learning to Leading: Laura Perguson’s SWANA Experience

August 7, 2025

July 28, 2025 | A SWANA Member Testimonial

I’ve been with OC Waste & Recycling (OCWR) for 36 years, but my path in the landfill industry started with humbly directing traffic at the landfill. Even in that entry level role, I knew I wanted to stay. There was something about this work that clicked with me. I wanted to learn everything I could about landfills and be part of a team making a real impact.

Over time, I moved up to equipment operator, where I learned to run every piece of landfill equipment. I worked on drainage projects, large-scale excavations, and liner installations, gaining a hands-on understanding of how our sites are built and maintained. Later, as a Landfill Site Supervisor, my perspective grew even more. I wasn’t just operating equipment anymore, I was helping to manage people, projects, and daily operations. That’s also when I was introduced to the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), and it changed everything.

Through SWANA’s certification programs, workshops, and conferences, I gained insights that transformed the way I approached my work. These weren’t just classes, they were practical, real-world lessons from people who understand the challenges of solid waste management. SWANA certification pushed me to expand my technical knowledge beyond daily operations. I learned about regulatory compliance, environmental planning, engineering concepts, composting, recycling, and even site closure processes. This knowledge gave me the confidence to make informed decisions, solve complex problems, and guide others effectively.

The knowledge I gained through SWANA became the foundation for what I currently do now as OCWR’s Heavy Equipment Training Program Manager. I built a comprehensive program that trains our landfill operators to follow industry standards for waste application, safety, and operational efficiency. This program didn’t exist before., I designed it from the ground up, using my experience in the field and the lessons I learned through SWANA.

Equally important, SWANA connected me to a network of peers who are just as committed to improving the solid waste industry. Sharing conversations and networking at conferences and workshops helped me see the bigger picture of how our work impacts not just our sites, but our communities and environment.

Even after decades in this field, I still rely on SWANA for continuing education, updates on regulations, and insights into new technologies and trends. It’s an organization that truly supports professional growth and raises the standard for our industry.

For anyone looking to advance in solid waste, I can’t recommend SWANA enough. It’s more than a certification: it’s a community, a resource, and a partner in building a safer, smarter, and more sustainable future for landfill operations.

Sincerely,

Laura Perguson
