Landfill Gas Basic Training & Our Current State of the Industry

July 9, 2026

"Landfill gas—you hear about it. We talk about it. But what is it really? What is it made of? How is it generated? " said SWANA Faculty Matt Stutz, principal with Weaver Consultants Group.

As landfill gas regulations evolve and new technologies reshape the industry, understanding the fundamentals of landfill gas management has never been more crucial.

Led by Stutz, SWANA’s Landfill Gas Basic Training is a one-day course held during RCon™ 2026 on September 28 that will leave participants with a clear understanding of landfill gas formation, collection, control, regulation, and emerging trends.

"In this one-day training course, learn the basics of landfill gas, collection and management, regulations, and more. Whether you are newer to the industry, looking for a refresher, or just seeking to gain a better understanding of landfill gas, this is for you.”

Why Landfill Gas Matters

Landfill gas management affects nearly every aspect of landfill operations, including environmental compliance, air quality, public health, greenhouse gas emissions, safety, and renewable energy production.

“Landfill gas-to-energy technology is evolving, and regulations are changing, so there is always more to learn about this important topic. We need to better understand the emerging technologies and the rules that govern landfill gas. How do we quantify, collect, and control it?” Stutz continued.
