Pivotal Supreme Court Ruling Sends eSession Attendance To All-Time High

Over 250 attendees viewed an interactive, online, educational session on the ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of United Haulers Association v. Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Management Authority. Friday's E-Session bosted by the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) was the highest attended online event in the Association's history.

"Solid waste professionals are eager to learn about the Supreme Court's decision and how it affects them," stated SWANA Executive Director and CEO John H. Skinner, Ph.D., following the conclusion of the session, "By putting out cutting-edge information in a timely manner, SWANA will continue to be at the forefront of education within the solid waste profession."

By a 6-3 margin, the high court ruled that local ordinance that direct locally generated solid wastes to publicly owned wasted facilities do not discriminate against interstate commerce. The court cited "compelling reasons" to justify treating these regulations different from laws favoring particular private business over their competitors.

Barry Shanoff, General Counsel for SWANA acted as the event moderator. Michael J. Cahill, the attorney who represented Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Management Authority before the Supreme Court, and David Biderman, National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) General Counsel presented the decision and addressed the various implications it will have for the solid waste management industry.

SWANA has hosted online educational events on a weekly basis since September 2003. This recorded E-Session is available for download at www.SWANAstore.com.
