SWANA Setting An Example: Incoming President Issues A Challenge

The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) introduced Laurie Batchelder Adams as the incoming president for 2008. She shared her excitement and commitment to protecting the environment.

As an association, SWANA's two missions are to advance the practice of environmentally and economically sound management of municipal solid waste in North America. Towards that end, SWANA is committed to protecting the environment in three areas: creating sustainable and renewable energy sources while limiting energy usage, reducing climate-changing emissions, and applying effective integrated waste management strategies. Ms. Batchelder Adams comes into presidency with high ambitions to carry out these goals.

"The United States does not have a consolidated response to climate change," said Laurie Batchelder Adams. "Luckily, however, many businesses, states, and cities do and SWANA has joined the ranks with its new energy, climate, and waste connection."

President Batchelder Adams addressed the conference attendees on the benefits of creating a 'greener solid waste industry."  She challenged all solid waste professionals to commit to taking action in their own facilities to reduce emission, conserve energy, and look for ways to move waste-to-energy techniques forward as a sustainable energy resource.  Ms. Batchelder Adams invited all solid waste professionals to post their commitments on the new SWANA  "Energy-Climate-Waste Challenge 2008" Web site, which can be found at www.SWANA.org

SWANA will set an example in the industry by off-setting the carbon emissions associated with the electrical energy usage in Reno, Nev, for WASTECON 2007, with the purchase of carbon off-set credits from the Lancaster County Solid Waste Authority on October 18, at 11:00 in the exhibit hall.
