WASTECON Goes Green: SWANA Is The First Industry Conference To Offsets Carbon Emissions

The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) will purchase emission offset credits for the facilities use and staff travel of its Annual Conference and Exhibition, WASTECON at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. This is the first event held at the convention center to offset emissions.

John H. Skinner, Ph.D., Executive Director and CEO of SWANA said, "We are pleased to be leading the industry in providing a more environmentally friendly conference for our members and attendees. The purchase of the emission credits furthers SWANA's committment to sustainability."

SWANA will purchase credits as a member of the Chicago Climate Exchange from the Lancaster County Solid Waste Authority Landfill Gas to Energy Project. This transaction will take place on the WASTECON Exhibit Floor on Thursday, October 18 at 10:00 a.m. In addition, attendees will be able to witness a live sale of emission offset credits on the Chicago Climate Exchange. SWANA member, James Warner of the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority was the first public environmental services organization in the United States to join the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX). CCX is a legally binding, multi-sector market for reducing and trading greenhouse gas emissions. Mr. Warner will discuss how the Authority qualified for inclusion in the CCX due to the installation of the Authority's landfill gas project and conduct a live sale of offset credits.
