SWANA Releases New ARF Report on Horizontal Landfill Gas Collection Systems

May 13, 2026 — Silver Spring, MD

The SWANA Applied Research Foundation (ARF) released a new report titled Horizontal Landfill Gas Collection Systems. This report provides updated guidance to assist solid waste professionals in designing, installing, and operating horizontal landfill gas (LFG) collection systems.

Developed with input from SWANA’s ARF Disposal Group and the Landfill Gas and Biogas Technical Division, the report reflects the latest industry knowledge and practical field experience, addressing a growing need for effective interim and early-stage gas collection strategies in modern landfill operations.

Horizontal LFG collection systems are commonly used during active landfill filling to capture gas before vertical wells can be installed. The report highlights how these systems can support earlier emissions control, improve operational flexibility, and complement conventional gas collection approaches.

“This report provides timely, practical guidance for landfill operators navigating evolving regulatory expectations and operational challenges,” said SWANA CEO Amy Lestition Burke, MA, FASAE, CAE. “By sharing proven design approaches and lessons learned, we aim to help members improve gas collection performance and reduce methane emissions.”

The report outlines key design considerations, including pipe materials, trench construction, liquid management strategies, and wellhead configurations. It also explores different types of horizontal collectors and their applications across varying landfill conditions.

In addition to design guidance, the publication examines the advantages and limitations of horizontal systems. While they can be deployed quickly and provide cost-effective emissions control, they may face challenges related to liquid accumulation, operational lifespan, and long-term performance compared to vertical wells.

The report includes real-world case studies from landfill operators across North America, offering insights into system performance and practical implementation considerations. These case studies highlight both the benefits and challenges associated with horizontal LFG collection, emphasizing the importance of site-specific design and operational planning.

This research was conducted through SWANA’s Applied Research Foundation, which supports collaborative, member-driven research on critical waste and resource management issues.

The full report is available complimentary to all SWANA members through the Applied Research Foundation.
