US EPA Presents Waste and Materials Management Training Series for Tribes

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is hosting a series of free in-person workshops on a range of industry-related topics. These training workshops are intended for Tribal staff.

  • Strategic Waste Management Planning: Making Your Integrated Waste Management Plan Useful
    Hosted by the Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada

    “Gain simple approaches for easily developing or updating an Integrated Waste Management Plan that’s relevant, strategic, and meaningful. In this workshop, participants will hone the goals of their waste management programs and identify paths towards achieving those goals.”

    Date: August 1, 2024 (with two, 90-minute post-workshop virtual sessions on August 22 and September 12)

  • Starting Community Composting Programs on Tribal Lands
    Hosted by the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians

    “Looking for solutions on how to manage organic materials on your lands, return nutrients to the soil and reduce landfilling? Join this in-person workshop to learn how to compost, identify community composting practices that may work well in your community, and chart a path towards developing a community composting program. We have a hands-on activity building a compost pile and hear from other Tribes on their composting experiences. Plus, new for this workshop, we’ll cover how to set up simple aeration systems for quicker composting with less manual labor!”

  • Household Hazardous Waste Collection Best Management Practices
    Hosted by the Big Valley Band of Pomo Indians

    See first-hand approaches and learn how to safely and responsibly manage accumulated household hazardous waste. Join this day and a ½ in-person workshop to learn how to identify, sort, and store HHW. Gain ideas for approaches to managing HHW that may work well in your community.”

  • Conducting Waste Characterizations
    Hosted by the Ak-Chin Indian Community

    This workshop will enable you to design and execute a waste assessment to answer key programmatic questions – for example, is our outreach working, how much organic material could we collect for composting, how much more could we recycle, and more. Learn how to assess the composition and quantity of the wastes being generating within your community by conducting a hands-on waste sort/characterization. By knowing the types and amounts of the materials and waste your community is generating, you can better evaluate waste management options and identify opportunities for improvement.”
