This webinar will focus on COVID’19 pandemic impacts, responses and associated attributes and variables in MSW management systems that will guide researchers, private sectors, regulators, and planning agencies toward the creation and implementation of resilient waste management operations for pandemics. The coronavirus pandemic is challenging the MSW management systems. To prevent the spread of COVID’19, most people are working from home, generating a larger amount of residential waste than normal. The increasing number of unavailable workers due to self-quarantining and the isolation of local areas as a result of travel bans are also adding additional constrain at MSW management system and facilities. With a pandemic, the function and interplay of different system components (i.e., waste collection companies, waste transfer stations, local government agencies, material recovery facilities, and landfills) must become more adaptive to maximize the limited capacity, which is key to accommodating excessive waste demand. This webinar focuses on the impact of the COVID’19 pandemic on MSW management system and their responses from urban to rural setting. Attendees will also receive highlights on how to establish a baseline structure for the normal MSW operation, which will help to distinguish entities' emerging behaviors during the pandemic operations.

SWANA, the Product Stewardship Institute (PSI), the Extended Producer Responsibility Alliance (EXPRA) & International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) present a webinar about the effect of packaging extended producer responsibility (EPR) programs on haulers and MRF operators. PSI will provide a brief overview of the status of packaging EPR in the U.S. and the different models that are emerging. Then a discussion will be held with representatives from large and small waste management companies, managers of municipal programs, and owners and operators of MRFs. This webinar will explore the roles that these stakeholders may have under EPR programs.
