“So, what do you do?”

May 28, 2020

You know the moment — you are standing at a neighborhood cookout or on the sidelines at your child’s game and someone asks, “So what do you do?” Did you know this moment is an opportunity to celebrate your job and promote your company, program, or agency? What you do every day protects both public health and safety, as well as the environment, and people are increasingly aware of your work’s importance. This question is a chance to tell your story — but quickly.

The Landfill Rebranding Committee (a joint committee of the Landfill Management and the Communication, Education and Marketing technical divisions) will be hosting a workshop during the virtual SWANApalooza program to help you prepare for this moment by drafting an “elevator speech,” or a practiced answer that lasts as much time as an average elevator ride. During this session, you’ll see both bad and good examples of elevator speeches. Then, you’ll write your own five- to six-sentence elevator speech and practice virtually with other participants.

Plan to take part in this informative and interactive session, “You Work WHERE?!: How to Positively Communicate About Your Job,” on Thursday, June 25 at 2:45 p.m. (EDT).
