Leveraging Technology for Improved Solid Waste Collections

Moderator

  • Amanda Erickson, Solid Waste Planner/Coordinator | HDR
Solid waste collections and operations are key to providing reliable service to customers and collecting materials for recycling and proper management. The use of technology can be incorporated to improve such services in a way that provides relevant data and a level of detail not previously available. HDR has recently integrated readily accessible technology to improve verification of collection services. Utilization of this technology allows service verification for collections and operations teams and document details for customer service.  HDR used Survery123, Go-Pros, and Street View imagery to gather significant amounts of data which was integrated into an interactive dashboard. The dashboard of data provided real-time collection updates that can be used for customer service requests, collection audits, and offer an insight into the efficiencies of services.

Greening the Crowd: How Festivals and Stadiums Are Rethinking Waste with Reuse, Recycling, and Composting

Moderator

  • Morgan McCarthy, Senior Manager | Raftelis

Large-scale events (music festivals, professional sporting events, county fairs, and stadium concerts) generate enormous volumes of waste in compressed timeframes, creating unique operational challenges that differ fundamentally from residential or commercial collection. Yet these same events offer some of the most promising laboratories for testing and scaling innovative strategies, from reusable serviceware systems to on-site composting and real-time contamination monitoring.  This roundtable discussion examines how event venues and festival organizers across the country are rethinking waste infrastructure to achieve ambitious diversion goals. It presents data from multiple case studies showcasing measurable outcomes: diversion rates achieved, contamination levels managed, cost impacts realized, and lessons learned from both successes and failures.
