Explore ongoing and emerging opportunities for beneficial use of waste-to-energy ash, including metals extraction, use in road and paving construction projects, processing requirements, and other initiatives. The discussion will also cover the current methods used to evaluate project financial feasibility.

 

Leveraging Technology for Improved Solid Waste Collections

Solid waste collections and operations are key to providing reliable service to customers and collecting materials for recycling and proper management. The use of technology can be incorporated to improve such services in a way that provides relevant data and a level of detail not previously available. HDR has recently integrated readily accessible technology to improve verification of collection services. Utilization of this technology allows service verification for collections and operations teams and document details for customer service.  HDR used Survery123, Go-Pros, and Street View imagery to gather significant amounts of data which was integrated into an interactive dashboard. The dashboard of data provided real-time collection updates that can be used for customer service requests, collection audits, and offer an insight into the efficiencies of services.

Expiring PPA: What’s Next? 

As landfill gas-to-energy power purchase agreements reach the end of their terms, landfill owners face important decisions about what comes next. This roundtable will explore options for aging LFG-to-electricity projects, including PPA renegotiation, continued power generation, conversion to RNG, alternative energy uses, and equipment considerations. Participants will share experiences, lessons learned, and key factors landfill owners should evaluate when determining the best path forward for their gas asset.

Participants will discuss which opportunities are gaining traction, what new technologies and markets are worth watching, and how landfill owners can position their sites for the next generation of LFG management and utilization.
