Meet a SWANA Young Professional: Melissa Pennett McDonald

August 20, 2025

SWANA Awards recognize personal and organizational excellence, achievements, and best practices.  We can’t wait to celebrate the 2025 SWANA Award winners at RCon™ in November!

As we look forward to the 2025 awards, we also celebrate the 2024 winners.

In this special feature, we talk with Melissa Pennett McDonald, one of the winners of the SWANA 2024 Young Professional of the Year Award. This annual honor recognizes the hard work, achievements, and dedication of three young professionals in the solid waste and resource management industry, inspiring the next generation of leaders.

Name: Melissa Pennett McDonald.

Job Title/Company: Environmental Sustainability Specialist, City of Fairfax, Virginia.

Where are you located? City of Fairfax, Virginia.

How many years have you been in the industry?

Five years.

If you were to travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Australia has been on my bucket list for years, and I was fortunate enough to travel all over the country for my honeymoon this past summer.

What does this recognition mean to you?

This recognition is deeply meaningful to me for so many reasons. It reflects the hard work and dedication I've poured into advancing sustainable waste management and zero waste initiatives. It’s also a reminder of the incredible mentors, colleagues, and community members who have supported and inspired me along the way. Being named one of SWANA's Young Professionals of the Year reaffirms my passion for this work and strengthens my commitment to driving positive change. It’s not just about personal achievement; it’s about being part of a larger movement to create a more sustainable, equitable future. This honor motivates me to keep innovating, collaborating, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in our industry. Ultimately, it means I’m on the right path—and there’s so much more to do!

How did your education contribute to you joining the solid waste industry?

I graduated with my Master’s Degree in Sustainable Urban Planning from George Washington University, which is an unconventional educational path to go into the solid waste field. One of the things I loved about urban planning and my graduate program at GWU was that I was able to find my niche and implement solid waste management best practices and innovations into my field of study. I was given an incredible opportunity to forge my own urban planning path through solid waste, which has landed me in a career I love.

As a YP, what about this industry have you found to be most interesting?

As a young professional, what I find most fascinating about this industry is its constant evolution and innovation. There’s always something new to learn, whether it’s emerging technologies, cutting-edge practices, or creative solutions to modernize and improve waste management. The dynamic nature of this field keeps it exciting and inspiring, as it offers endless opportunities to grow and make a meaningful impact.

What are the topics you see keeping you busy over the next 5-10 years?

Over the next decade, I see myself focusing on advancing zero waste policies and practices. This includes driving the transition toward more sustainable consumer behavior, developing and implementing innovative programs to reduce, reuse, and recycle materials, and working closely with communities to integrate zero waste strategies into daily life. Every person has a role to play in reducing waste and conserving our natural environment, and I am very excited to be part of that change over the coming years.

What’s your favorite project you’ve worked on?

My favorite project I have worked on (thus far) is implementing the revenue expenditures from the disposable plastic bag tax per Virginia state laws. With the revenue received, I have had the pleasure of working to give the revenue back to city residents in fun ways, including the installation of two public art pieces showcasing recycled materials and the impact waste has on our environment.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

When I am not working, I really enjoy stepping away from screens and getting outside whenever I can. Hiking, biking, or just walking around town, any time away from my phone or computer is a great time to decompress and enjoy nature.
