SWANA Legacy Fund Supports Early Career Professional Development

May 16, 2024

Created by past board presidents and leaders, the SWANA Legacy Fund contributors select an initiative to support which advances the mission and vision of the Solid Waste Association of North America. Annual initiatives are funded for one year and do not obligate the committee or association to future funding.

2024 Young Professional Stipend Program

For calendar year 2024, the committee will fund three $1,500 stipends (e.g., “scholarships for individuals in the workforce”) to support attendance at a SWANA national conference or training center. The intent is to identify high-potential young professionals who are very early in their career and would be unlikely to be approved for travel to a national event or training.

Winners of the Stipends will be Eligible for:

  1. One year of SWANA membership in the YP category
  2. One complimentary full registration to one SWANA national conference or training center
  3. Reimbursement up to $1,500 of travel expenses

Criteria for Nominations:

  • Have not attended a national SWANA professional development program
  • 35 years or younger at time of nomination
  • Work in the solid waste industry less than three years
  • Identified by supervisor or above as a high-potential contributor to the solid waste industry

Nominations Deadline:

Nominations are open until June 24, 2024.

Nominations will be reviewed by the Legacy Fund contributors. Typical areas of consideration may include:

  • Potential for leadership, innovation, and impact within field or career-path
  • Commitment to advancing their skills, knowledge, and expertise in their field
  • Evidence of ongoing participation in professional development activities, such as workshops, seminars, or certifications
  • Demonstrated understanding of the association's mission, values, and objectives
