SWANA Scholarship Applications Now Available

SWANA has posted the applications forms for its annual Grant H. Flint Scholarship Awards Program on the SWANA website

Named for a Southern California Founding Chapter member who was a driving force in the formation of the Solid Waste Association of North America, the four SWANA scholarships distribute up to $20,000 a year to help offset college expenses. SWANA also administers the $5,000 Robert P. Stearns/SCS Engineers Scholarship, which is named for the co-founder of SCS Engineers. 

Many SWANA chapters also provide local scholarships as well as sending nominees on to SWANA for consideration in the Grant H. Flint Scholarship Awards Program. 

“Our members are in the forefront of changing the industry from managing waste to managing resources,” said SWANA Deputy Executive Director Sara Bixby. “It’s an exciting time to consider a career in some aspect of solid waste management and we hope these scholarships will encourage and support students along that path.”

There are three scholarship categories:

• Category 1 – three awards of $5,000 each to high school seniors or equivalent accepted into junior college, college or university in any program. Applicants must be the children or grandchildren of an active SWANA member who acts as their sponsor. See the Category I application.
• Category II – one award of $5,000 to a rising college junior or senior who is pursuing a degree in environmental science, environmental studies, engineering or a major related to or applicable to the field of solid waste management. Applicants must join SWANA as a student member, which is free. See the Category II application.
• The Robert P. Stearns/SCS Engineers Scholarship – one award of $5,000 to a full-time student entering or currently enrolled in graduate school studying toward a degree in environmental science, engineering, or other major related to solid waste management. Applicants must join SWANA as a student member, which is free. See the Stearns/SCS Engineers application.

Applications must be submitted to the student or member’s Chapter Scholarship Representative no later than May 1, 2020. Note that some chapters may have earlier deadlines.
