Robert “Bob” Epler of San Diego, California passed away on June 1, 2023, at age 84.

Bob Epler served as SWANA’s International President in 1979. He retired as the Assistant Director of Environmental Services for the City of San Diego in 2003, but he continued to work as a consultant and participate in SWANA events.

Matthew Cleary, the Assistant Director of the City of San Diego Environmental Services Department, said, “He will forever be remembered as a leader in the solid waste space and a tireless public servant.”

SWANA joins his family, friends and professional colleagues in mourning Mr. Epler’s passing. A graveside service will be held on June 9 at the Miramar National Cemetery.

Robert Floyd “Bob” Fletcher, Jr. passed away on May 31, 2023, at age 71.

It is with deep sadness that we remember and honor the life of our esteemed faculty member and Retired Lieutenant Colonel Robert Floyd "Bob" Fletcher, Jr., who passed away on May 31, 2023, surrounded by his beloved family. Mr. Fletcher, a highly esteemed faculty member, left an indelible mark on the waste management industry, touching the lives of countless colleagues and professionals.

Born on April 17, 1952, in Springfield, Mr. Fletcher graduated from Springfield High School in 1970. He earned his bachelor's degree in Agriculture from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and later pursued a master's degree in Applied Engineering and Technology Management from Murray State University. With a distinguished military career, Mr. Fletcher served in the US Army for 28 years, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Subsequently, he worked as an Environmental Consultant with the Department of Environment and Conservation for the State of Tennessee.

Mr. Fletcher exhibited an unwavering commitment to excellence. As a dedicated and remarkable member of SWANA faculty for over 13 years, he led the SWANA/NAHMMA 24-hour Household Hazardous Waste & VESQG Collection Operations training program. Moreover, Mr. Fletcher's expertise extended to training, research, development, and presentation across various areas, including waste tires, used oil programs, OSHA HAZWOPER, and workforce sustainability. His exceptional personality and infectious enthusiasm, combined with his extensive experience and profound knowledge, rendered his courses engaging and exceptional.

Throughout his career, Mr. Fletcher efficiently managed the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) program across all 95 counties in Tennessee, overseeing four permanent facilities and organizing 50-60 mobile events throughout the state.

Today, we reflect on the immense contributions and lasting impact that Mr. Fletcher made during his tenure in waste management education. His passion, knowledge, and dedication enriched the lives of those he taught and inspired, leaving an enduring legacy within the industry.

Our deepest sympathies and thoughts go out to Mr. Fletcher's family, friends, colleagues, and the countless individuals whose lives he influenced. May his memory continue to inspire and guide us as we strive for excellence in waste management.
