The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) has selected six students to receive $30,000 in scholarships through its Grant H. Flint Scholarship Program, Gershman Scholarship and the Robert P. Stearns/SCS Engineers Scholarship.
The number of awards increased in 2021 with the addition of the Harvey W. Gershman Scholarship.
The scholarship winners were drawn from a pool of 36 scholarship applications nominated to SWANA by chapters across the United States and Canada. Each student will receive a $5,000 scholarship for use in the coming academic year.

Isabella Riano, nominated by the New York Chapter, attending Cornell University to study government, sponsored by her mother Nancy Blanco |
Jason Pang, a SWANA student member of the British Columbia – Yukon Pacific Chapter, attending the University of British Columbia with a major in Global Resource Systems |
Victoria Chanez, a SWANA student member of the Wisconsin Badger Chapter attending the University of Wisconsin-Platteville with a major in Environmental Engineering |
Mohsen Zafari, a SWANA student member of the Ontario Chapter, working on his PhD in Geo Environmental Engineering at Queen’s University (Kingston, ON) |
Each applicant was asked to include a short essay about some aspect of solid waste management. Several will appear as blogs at https://swana.org/news/blog.
