SWANA Announces 2021 Scholarship Winners

The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) has selected six students to receive $30,000 in scholarships through its Grant H. Flint Scholarship Program, Gershman Scholarship and the Robert P. Stearns/SCS Engineers Scholarship.

The number of awards increased in 2021 with the addition of the Harvey W. Gershman Scholarship. 

The scholarship winners were drawn from a pool of 36 scholarship applications nominated to SWANA by chapters across the United States and Canada. Each student will receive a $5,000 scholarship for use in the coming academic year.

  • Category I: Graduating high school seniors studying any subject

Abby Card, nominated by the Southern New England Chapter, attending the University of Connecticut to study nursing, sponsored by her father Brian Card

Mara Gerber, nominated by the Utah Beehive Chapter, attending Brigham Young University to study counseling, sponsored by her grandfather Dwayne Woolley

Isabella Riano, nominated by the New York Chapter, attending Cornell University to study government, sponsored by her mother Nancy Blanco

  • Category II: Undergraduate junior or senior pursuing a degree in a field related to solid waste management:

Jason Pang, a SWANA student member of the British Columbia – Yukon Pacific Chapter, attending the University of British Columbia with a major in Global Resource Systems

  • Harvey W. Gershman Scholarship, named for the co-founder of Gershman, Brickner & Bratton (GBB), and awarded to an undergraduate pursuing a degree in studies related to solid waste or resource management and intending to see employment in the field:
Victoria Chanez, a SWANA student member of the Wisconsin Badger Chapter attending the University of Wisconsin-Platteville with a major in Environmental Engineering
  • The Robert P. Stearns/SCS Engineers Scholarship, named for the co-founder of SCS Engineers, and awarded to a student entering or already enrolled in a graduate program and pursuing a degree in environmental science, engineering or other major related to solid waste management:
Mohsen Zafari, a SWANA student member of the Ontario Chapter, working on his PhD in Geo Environmental Engineering at Queen’s University (Kingston, ON)

Each applicant was asked to include a short essay about some aspect of solid waste management. Several will appear as blogs at https://swana.org/news/blog
