This presentation will offer a comprehensive analysis of single-stream and manufacturing Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) operations, providing a behind-the-scenes examination of critical processes. A key focus will be identifying the essential knowledge local governments require to effectively oversee recycling processing. By understanding these operational dynamics, recycling and collections program managers will be better equipped to navigate the complexities of solid waste management contracts, ultimately optimizing recycling capture rates and financial returns. Specific topics of discussion will include technological advancements in automation, methodologies for composition audits, the impact of maintenance on sorting efficiency, strategies for securing material sales premiums, and best practices in revenue-share calculations.

Additionally, this presentation will address the often-overlooked role of recycling operations within manufacturing facilities, which play a significant yet under-recognized role in landfill diversion efforts. Insights from real-world applications will highlight strategies for integrating recycling into manufacturing environments and retrofitting existing programs to enhance efficiency. Key considerations include facility layout optimization, material flow management, material handling techniques, lineside collection strategies, and recycling processing operations specific to manufacturing operations.

The presentation will draw upon several examples, including managing a large-scale single stream MRF processing 15,000 tons per month and developing the recycling program at the Tesla Gigafactory Austin, which processes 10,000 tons per month.
