As the reliance on lithium-ion batteries continues to rise across various sectors, from consumer electronics to electric vehicles, the implications for waste management have become increasingly significant. This session will share how the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) has taken the lead in addressing the challenges posed by lithium-ion batteries in the waste stream through its Safe Battery Disposal campaign. Attendees will learn the impacts of lithium-ion batteries on the waste industry, practical strategies for investment in loss protection, the best practices for public education, and how to implement a battery safety campaign in their community.

Lithium-ion batteries are in many everyday items, from small handheld devices to medium power tools to large electronic scooters and bikes. Lithium-ion batteries present unique hazards to waste management operations, as they can spark and explode when damaged. Fires in garbage trucks and processing facilities are rising, and LCSWMA developed a method to help protect employees, waste collectors, property, and the community. LCSWMA invested $10.4 million in fire suppression and educated and partnered with local first responders and governmental agencies. It also invested tens of thousands of dollars in education assets, including truck trailer wraps, flyers, and social media GIFs. This multifaceted, strategic approach combining risk management and public education is crucial to combating this industry crisis and protecting the future of waste and resource management.
