You Thinking P3? Partnership Strategies for Renewable Natural Gas Projects

Regardless of the source of biogas, renewable natural gas projects need time and concentrated effort by many stakeholders to be implemented correctly. Most biogas to renewable natural gas (RNG) projects in North America are developed by third parties via public-private or private-private partnerships with the goal of additional incremental revenue for the owner of the feedstock or gas source facility, e.g. landfill gas, manure, wastewater plants, etc.. Facility owners often receive a broad range of development companies that express interest, from two guys named Chuck driving a truck into your facility unannounced (formally known as “two Chucks in a truck”) to larger companies with established names and varying degrees of projects that provide successful outcomes for both parties. Facility owners should be informed to make good decisions about who might be living in their “house” for the next 15–20 years.

The RNG world is continually changing (generally in a good way) and this presentation will touch on:

  • Current RNG market dynamics = The Beautiful, the Mediocre, and the Ugly. Bonus section: Emerging trends and what we should be thinking about from an advocacy standpoint.
  • Evaluating your potential development partners and how to structure the project so that all parties share a mutual interest.
  • Necessary counterparties and the stages at which the facility should engage them.
  • Several case studies will be presented throughout to help illustrate the presentation content.
