SWANA is holding an in-person Train-the-Trainer (TTT) workshop for individuals interested in teaching the all-new Manager of Landfill Operations course, newly developed in 2021. The TTT workshop is open to current and prospective MOLO instructors and will be delivered at SOAR, SWANA’s premier technical conference, on Sunday, March 20, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m, in Kansas City, MO. Please note this workshop focuses on the American version of the MOLO course, not the Canadian adaptation of the MOLO course, which is under development. A separate train-the-trainer workshop will be held for the Canadian version in the late-Spring of 2022.
Participants will learn about best practices and principles for teaching adult learners; receive an overview of the development of the new course, which is based on the new MOLO Body of Knowledge, a compendium of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required of today’s MOLOs; and review the 13 modules that comprise the current course. Participants will receive the new MOLO course manual in hard-copy format.
As a condition of becoming a certified MOLO instructor, prospective instructors are required to student-teach segments of a MOLO course under the auspices of SWANA-certified instructors, who will evaluate their performance. Prospective instructors are evaluated on a variety of criteria, including the use of professional teaching strategies; the use of exercises and learning activities that underscore learning objectives; how effectively course materials and resources are used; adherence to SWANA policies and procedures; classroom management skills; communication with students and co-presenter(s); time management; and professionalism. Former MOLO instructors do not need to student-teach but are required to attend the Train-the-Trainer workshop. (NOTE: Individuals who attended all sessions of the online TTT workshop offered in the fall of 2021 are not required to attend the in-person workshop.)
Current MOLOs do not need to become certified on the new MOLO certification exam to teach the new MOLO course. However, prospective instructors who are not currently MOLO certified will be required to earn MOLO certification on the new MOLO exam to teach the new course.
