SWANA Supports Recycling Equipment Tax Incentive

A tax incentive for the purchase of recycling equipment has been included by the Senate Finance Committee in a package intended to be added to the Senate Energy Bill currently under consideration. SWANA collaborated with Senator Jim Jeffords (I-Ver.) during the development of the legislation and is listed as one of the supporting organizations.

Known as the Recycling Investment Saves Energy (RISE) Act, the recycling provision creates a 15% tax credit for equipment used in the processing and sorting of recyclable materials. Recyclers in theUnited States would receive nearly $100 million in tax incentives over 10 years under the new tax credit. The provision is intended to increase the quantity and quality of recyclable materials collected.

In a letter of support to Senator Jeffords, John H. Skinner Ph.D., SWANA's Executive Director and CEO, stated "While we believe there is more to be done to encourage recycling and product stewardship, your legislation makes a great step in the right direction." The letter further states "SWANA stands ready to assist you in your efforts to bolster recycling and we are pleased to support this legislation."
