SWANA CEO Addresses ISWA Congress On Climate, Energy & Waste

Solid Waste Association of North America's (SWANA) Executive Director and CEO, John H. Skinner, Ph.D.,  addressed the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) World Waste Congress on September 25, 2007, in Amsterdam, Netherland.  In a session on Global Climate Control Policies, Dr. Skinner presented his paper entitled "The Changing Political Climate in North America: Energy, Warming and Waste."  Skinner discussed the increased support of governments and industry in the U.S. & Canada to respond to global warming and climate change.  He pointed out that this response has created a new opportunity for the solid waste management industry to provide solutions to global warming through improved solid waste management practices including waste reduction, energy-efficient recycling, sustainable composting and recovery of renewable energy from solid waste.  Along with these improvements comes the prospect of the inclusion of waste-to-energy and landfill gas recovery and utilization programs in renewable energy incentives.  Dr. Skinner's paper is available in the ISWA World Waste Congress proceedings and will be published as a featured article in the November/December issue of World Waste Magazine.

SWANA's President-Elect, Laurie Batchelder Adams, and Dr. Skinner represented Canada and the United States at the ISWA General Assembly on September 23, 2007.  ISWA is the International Solid Waste Association and its mission is to promote sustainable solid waste management world-wide. The General Assembly is the governing body of ISWA and is comprised of 36 countries from around the world. SWANA is the National Member for both Canada and the United States and sits on the General Assembly representing both countries.
