PFAS in Landfill Gas

PFAS has been found in landfill emissions since 2011, but we still need a methodology for measuring PFAS in landfill gas. 

PFAS Impact on Air Quality Around Landfills

Dr. Morton Barlaz, Head of the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at North Carolina State University is currently developing a PFAS Systems Analysis Tool to assess a wide range of PFAS-containing wastes. The goal of this project, which began in 2020, is to sample a cross-section of US landfills.

What We Still Don’t Know

• Whether flares destroy PFAS
• Fate of PFAS through LFG Utilization
• Exposure potential to neighboring communities
