PFAS Interim Guidance and PFAS Drinking Water Regulations Released by US EPA

April 11, 2024

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released an updated “Interim Guidance on the Destruction and Disposal of Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances and Materials Containing Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances,” known as PFAS. This update on the EPA’s 2020 interim guidance includes more recent information and data.

The document provides guidance on technologies for PFAS destruction and disposal, mainly focusing on landfills, underground injection, and thermal treatment. It also includes a framework for users to evaluate emerging technologies. EPA summarizes data gaps and areas requiring research and describes EPA test methods.

The EPA will continue to conduct research on PFAS destruction and disposal and will consider comments on the guidance document.

If you have comments on the updated guidance document, please contact Kristyn Oldendorf at koldendorf@swana.org.

In addition, the EPA released its final National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWR) for six PFAS. There will be nearly $1 billion in national funding available to support states and territories with PFAS testing and treatment at public water systems and private wells. Additional fact sheets, webinar registration, and background are available on the EPA website
